Sohnne Eames Chair Review
Leather
The Sohnne Eames chair leather is proudly 100% full-grain leather. For those of you who are not familiar with the quality and variety of options available in the luxury market, we would like to inform you that the highest quality of furniture-grade leather, known as top-grain or full-grain leather, comes in two types: aniline and semi-aniline.
Aniline is the purest and most expensive form of leather and is generally lightweight, untreated, and does not have any additional protective layers applied. The advantage is that the leather is breathable and allows heat to be distributed more evenly. Most importantly, it feels softer.
Unfortunately, there are a few drawbacks to this, such as it being highly susceptible to stains (of all kinds – including those from oils from the skin), scratches, and sunlight, which makes it not recommended for everyday use furniture.
This leather is highly susceptible to absorbing even the smallest droplets of water, so it requires constant maintenance. Some may say that this adds a patina, but we do not recommend it.
The logical alternative to pure aniline is semi-aniline. The main difference between the two is that aniline emphasizes the characteristics of genuine leather, such as natural pores and scratches, while semi-aniline leather receives a protective coating that slightly covers them, providing durability and a more consistent color.
It is, therefore naturally more suitable for public use with lots of people coming and going, and if, like this writer, you frequently take a break from drinking coffee or beer and don’t want to worry about permanent stains or stick to a strict cleaning regimen, you will find that semi-aniline is the best choice.
Shell
More specifically, the shell itself is available in walnut, white oak, or pallisander (Brazilian rosewood – closest to the original design). The shell is made of seven layers of real wood glued together on both sides and kiln-dried to prevent warping.
It’s worth noting that these layers of real wood are much more expensive to use than their laminate counterparts found in cheaper replicas. They can look cheaper and are more prone to warping.
Aluminum Base
Let’s talk about the base. There’s not much to say here, but the Eames Chair comes with a sturdy aluminum base that matches the original pitch and dimensions, and sits at a permanent 15-degree incline.
The pitch and dimensions are so similar that you can’t tell the difference. As for the construction itself, the aluminum is die-cast in black with a glossy bright trim.
As inspired, it has an additional built-in swivel mechanism that supports a full range of motion with rubber shock mounts that provide some flexibility when the user sits.
Conclusion
If you want to spend around $1,000 on a higher-quality replica, then this Sohnne’s Eames Chair is the one for you.
